Brisbane 2032 Olympics Infrastructure: A Game-Changer for the City

The Queensland government has unveiled plans for a new 63,000-seat stadium in Brisbane's Victoria Park to serve as the centrepiece for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This development represents a significant shift from earlier proposals and will bring about transformative changes to the city, with extensive infrastructure projects designed to leave a lasting legacy.  The proposed stadium will be constructed in Victoria Park, located just north of Brisbane's central business district. It is slated to host the athletics events during the Olympics and will become the new home for AFL and cricket in Brisbane post-Games, replacing the existing Gabba stadium.  Architect Michael Rayner, instrumental in shaping modern Brisbane, initially proposed utilising Victoria Park as an Olympic precinct in 2019. His vision includes transforming the under-utilised area into a vibrant urban space that connects the central business district with Bowen Hills. Rayner emphasises that Olympic venues would occupy approximately 20% of the parkland, aiming to enhance the park's utility while preserving its green space. Other major key developments include:

  • Spring Hill Aquatic Centre: A new national aquatic hub will be built to host Olympic swimming and water polo events.
  • Bowen Hills Athletes’ Village: The village will house over 16,000 athletes and officials, with nearby transport links for easy access to competition venues.
  • Gabba Redevelopment: The iconic stadium will undergo a $1.1 billion upgrade, ensuring it serves as a world-class venue for the Games and beyond.

The Queensland government’s $7.1 billion budget for infrastructure projects will also include upgrades to roads, public transport, and key venues, ensuring efficient movement during the Games and future use.

Timelines and Regional Developments

Construction is already underway, with key venues expected to be ready by 2028, leaving a solid buffer before the Games begin in 2032. Upgrades to regional areas, including the Bruce Highway and transport hubs, will ensure that Brisbane and surrounding communities are ready for the influx of visitors. The proposed stadium at Victoria Park is set to be a landmark development for Brisbane, aiming to provide a world-class venue for the 2032 Olympics and a lasting legacy for the city's sporting and cultural landscape.
